Today on the tour, I’ll be interviewing Gabrielle Arrowsmith, author of CONCEALED IN THE SHADOWS. Who doesn’t love dystopian, right?
Sydney Harter has long awaited September 12th, 2033—her eighteenth birthday. She can finally apply for guardianship of her sister, who is her only family and entire world. She hopes they will be lawfully reunited, but is prepared to defy authority and risk everything to escape the captivity of Miles County so that they can be together.
Escaping will be difficult and dangerous. Citizens are bound to their county by sophisticated chip implants that deliver shocks to those who dare to cross the electric barrier. Sydney is very clever, but her trickery is limited against the all-seeing eyes of technology. Even if they were to survive the escape, disappearing into the forgotten forests and towns of the past seems an impossible task.
What Sydney doesn’t know is that she is the particular interest of two opposing forces. With deceit, fear, and warfare surrounding her—can she trust the party that aims to help with her fight against the other? Can she open her heart to receive and return unexpected love? When her sister’s life becomes jeopardized, Sydney will have to weigh a new love against the only enduring love she has known. The cost could be deadly…
How will she choose?
And without further ado, let’s get on with the interview. Many thanks to Gabrielle Arrowsmith for answering my nosy questions.
First of all: tell us briefly what your book’s about.
“Concealed in the Shadows” is about Sydney’s struggle to make a better life for her little sister and herself. This has always been difficult given then constructs of the dystopian future in which the girls live, but becomes increasingly precarious after one untimely event causes her to fight for not only happiness in life for those she cares about, but for life itself.
What would you like readers to take away from this book?
I would like readers to be inspired to persevere through whatever struggle they may face in life. There are always reasons for us to smile, and we should work to find one everyday. I also want readers to realize that every person has something to offer you. It could be knowledge, friendship, or simply a better understanding of yourself, but you won’t know unless you give people, in general, a chance to impact your life.
What’s your favourite part of writing?
My favorite part of writing is when some exciting, crazy twist comes to mind and works itself into the story perfectly. Those are the times when my passion for storytelling is at its peak, and the writing flows wildly.
Do you think you’ll keep writing Young Adult (YA)?
Yes, I will definitely continue to write YA. It is one of my favorite genres to read, which is naturally why my debut novel was written for the young adult audience. I am already writing the second installment of the series, and plan to write more in the future.
And finally: best bit about Clean Teen Publishing?
Why the team, of course! Being that “Concealed in the Shadows” is my debut novel, I have not had experience with any other publishing companies, but I can’t imagine a team that is harder-working, more author friendly, or more down to earth than the CTP team. I feel extremely grateful to be working with such talented, determined, and fun ladies!
