Title: Cinder (#1 of The Lunar Chronicles)

Author: Marissa Meyer

Genre: YA sci-fi/ fairytale retelling

Published by: Macmillan

Length: 387 pages

Source: borrowed from school library

Blurb:

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

I put off reading this for as long as I could. Mostly because my sister likes it and that MUST mean it’s awful. But after hearing soooo many people rave about it, eventually I had to see what all the fuss was about.

And it turns out the fuss is not ludicrous, because I loved it! In fact I’m going to make a list of the things I loved about it because lists are great:

1)      I loved Peony and how she wasn’t an awful stepsister.

2)      I loved that it was set in New Beijing – diversity FTW.

3)      I loved that Cinder was a mechanic; you don’t see that very often in YA.

4)      I loved that it’s a fairytale retelling in a sci-fi book with some elements of magic (although that’s explained as science anyway).

5)      Cinder is just a great character.

6)      So is Iko.

7)      And Kai.

8)      Marissa Meyer made me hate Adri more than I have ever hated a character ever. Well, that’s not true because Umbridge. But Adri came very close!

Buuuuuut, there were things I didn’t like as much.

Mainly, I guessed the end plot twist right at the start of the book. I mean, come on.

And that was even with my sister’s misleading comments of “no, you’re completely wrong.” Sophie, if you’re reading this that was rude.

Also, towards the end of the book there’s reference to a “coy” pond. I mean, really. I laughed out loud and it was quite a tense moment (yes, I’m nitpicking GREATLY, but incorrect grammar annoys me).

I also would have liked to see more of the Chinese culture, since not much of it was in the story. But overall, I really really liked it. On with Scarlet!

Rating: 4/5 Wonderkitties.

  1. I’ve done that to my sister. 😉 Hehe, sisters are a delightfully evil crowd of citizens. I lead mine up SUCH a wild goose trail with a book once I think she was totally confused at the end. But you can’t have them guessing and being RIGHT now can you?? Mime and me hardly ever read/adore the same books, so I HEAR YOU. Except the Lunar Chronicles. That’s our exception. We loooove them. IKO. I half ship Iko/Kai actually….

    • Sisters are great 😛 I look forward to leading her on a wild goose chase for any book she reads from now on. I’m glad it’s a book we both like, though, because that’s very rare. I told her to read The Hunger Games and she told me it was “boring.” Now she’s a way bigger fan than me!

  2. Still haven’t read this one haha. I’m glad you enjoyed this one overall (: The note about your sister leading you astray made me laugh 😛 I’ve never really had that experience haha. I just have to brothers who hate reading lol. It’s great when you read an book that made you feel all of the feels! I can’t wait to read this one.

    Fantastic review :]

  3. Go Asian settings! ❤ I do agree that Chinese culture should've been shown a little bit more. If you loved Cinder here, she'll be totally amazing in Cress! ❤ I loved Iko as well, but Kai? Not so much, lol! Fantastic review and I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! 🙂

  4. The first time I read this book I actually love it to the max! Especially Kai and Cinder. I like how Cinder is portrayed as a mechanic with a cyborg foot. She looks so sexy in my imagination.

However, when I re-read it last year, the flaws of the character suddenly dawns to me. Obviously on the ball scene. So basically, from 5 stars, it fell down to 4. Anyway, I think that’s one reason why I haven’t continued the series yet. But I already purchased Scarlet just yesterday and I’m planning to read it next. When are you going to read Scarlet? If you need a reading buddy, just let me know. lol.

    • It’s interesting you mention that about re-reading: when I re-read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, I actually liked it MORE the second time. But it makes sense that a second reading would expose more flaws.

I’ll probably end up reading Scarlet next week sometime. I’ll catch up with you on Twitter, maybe?

  5. Great review Emily! I picked up this book recently too, as I couldn’t stand the hype much longer without having read it! However, today, I decided to take a break from it as it has disappointed me…the hype made my expectations too high. However, I’ve heard that Scarlet and Cress are awesome, so after taking a break from Cinder, I hope I will finish it soon. 🙂

  6. I ADORE these books. Marissa does such a good job of weaving the traditional fairytale with her own dystopian plot. I can’t wait for you to read Cress! Scarlet was OKAY, but Cress was the most fantastic book in the entire series. It was SO well written and just ahhh ❤ I cannot gush enough

  7. Great review! I just love this series because it’s so much fun. These books are basically made out of fun. And ships. I can’t wait for you to read the rest of the series 😀 I hope you’ll enjoy them!
