1) Eragon by Christopher Paolini
This is a pretty dense read to start with – loooots of description. But I’m so glad I ended up reading it!
2) The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
I hated Charlie at the beginning – and even when I’d finished it after the first time. After a second reading, I absolutely adored it (and still do).
3) The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien
I’m not good at reading classics. They bore me. But I’m really glad I can say I’ve read The Hobbit.
4) Allegiant by Veronica Roth
These three books are ones I wish I had stopped reading. Allegiant was just…it made me angry. But I had to finish it just so I could be done with the series.
5) The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
This is an unpopular opinion, I know, but I hated this book. The main character just seemed so stupid it irked me.
6) The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants by Ann Brashares
Yeah…I wasn’t feeling this one, either, but for some reason I went ahead and finished it.
7) The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Again, not that fond of classics. But I’m glad I finished this one, because I think it’s really important.
8) Shift by Em Bailey
VERY glad I stuck around for the end of this one. The beginning was slow, but the twists and turns made it worth the ride.
9) The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E Lockhart
Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this one. I was only finishing it to find out the big secret, only to be let down by it. Oh well, I’d still read other books by her.
So those are the books that – for better or worse – I nearly stopped reading but didn’t. What about you?

Eragon in on my list, too! Hmm, I think it was the detailed description that put me off it for awhile… and it’s length was kind of daunting at the young-ish age I read it at. My list looks a little sad, though, I could only managed to come up with three books haha. I generally like to finish book I start, though, ’cause I’m so dang stubborn. 🙂
Ugh, and don’t even get me started on the ending of Allegiant. Urgh.
Same with me for Eragon – I think I started it in year 4 or something. I like finishing books once I’ve started too – that’s why I’ve never DNFd a book. Despite having not much time, it just bothers me not finishing a book! So saying I almost put them down…well, I might have thought about it, but I probably wouldn’t have 😛
There’s a few books I’ve felt that way about, the most recent is Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman. The first 40 pages irked me, the next 100 made me feel so much better. Also have to say The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness was one I almost out down and kind of wish I had, and Endless by Amanda Gray, so wish I’d not forced my way through that book but it was my first ever NetGalley and I wanted to look and sound fantastic 😉
THAT IS LIKE MY FAVOURITE SERIES EVER. I agree it can get kind of…dense at times, but it’s such an incredible read. I’ve never read The Knife of Never Letting Go, or Endless for that matter, but I can imagine! Shame your first Netgalley book wasn’t as great as you thought it would be 😦
I have The Hobbit in my bookshelf for so many years now and until now, I can’t get pass chapter 5. Yes, I checked my bookmark right now and it’s still there.
I want to finish the Divergent trilogy too just because I have bought the first and second book. But after reading the reviews about the third book, I’m so hesistant to continue it. Maybe I’ll watch all the movies then read the book.
Haha, that was the same as me with The Hobbit for a while. I think I tried three times to finish it and was only stubborn enough a couple of years ago to get through the whole thing. Then Lord of the Rings. Oh, lordy, that took a long time.
Noooo! I loved The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Allegiant. >_< But I can understand why they didn't work for everybody. I want to try Shift eventually. 😉

LOL, I guiltily put down Perks. 😛 I ADORED the movie (’cause duh, Logan Lerman) but the book was just so meh for me. I put down the Sisterhood of the Traveling pants, too, haha! Gee, I sound like a bad reader right now. I nearly stopped reading a lot of books since I am super nitpicky. I should try getting rid of my immediately-put-down-boring-books habit. -_-
Oh good I’m not the only one. I would really suggest re-reading Perks though – I enjoyed it SO much more the second time (I realise as I’m typing this that you probably don’t have time to, but oh well, I’m just putting it out there). Ugh, I don’t see what the fuss is about Sisterhood. I didn’t like it at all. But I rarely ever put down books these days – I think a part of that is because I know what I like now, but also I’m stubborn 😛
Yeah, I wish I stopped reading Allegiant as well because I was so irate at the end of it I was just full of emotions and anger and I don’t even. I actually haven’t read any Lord of The Rings book or The Hobbit! I’m glad I stuck through with Eragon as well, because I enjoyed that one.
So was I – I can’t remember ever being more angry about a book. But a lot of people enjoyed it! I had to read Fellowship of the Ring for school…and the Hobbit, now I remember. They took soooo long to read, but worth it 🙂
maybe I should go give Perks another read because I didn’t really enjoyed it that much~
I would recommend that, actually. I liked it MUCH more on a second read after giving Charlie a chance 🙂
I’m like Cait, I really liked Allegiant and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I can see why you wouldn’t like Allegiant though! Great list, Emily!
Each to their own! I mean, obviously, otherwise reading people’s reviews would be really boring. I think it’s important to see why others would like a book, or not like it – part of critical reading, I suppose? Or empathy? I’m not even sure what I’m talking about anymore 😛
I have Shift on my TBR list, will definitely be moving it higher up the list now! Great list 🙂

I guess I cheated with Allegiant, I listened to the audiobook instead so I guess it wasn’t so bad though I was left with lots of wtfs. But starting a book and not finishing it is disappointing as a reader. I’m struggling through Stephen Kings’ Talisman now, and seriously considering putting it down until I’m mentally prepared . . . years from now 😛 lol! Great post though!
I’ve actually never listened to an audiobook. It’s something I’d like to do one day. I’ve never read any of Stephen King’s books. Good luck with it for in a few years’ time! 😛
Allegiant pissed me off something chronic. Not only did someone spoil it for me before it was released, then my Booktopia preorder arrived two weeks AFTER it was released, then to rub salt into the wound, it was craptastic. I was fuming. I mean, what on earth was THAT! She might as well have just drawn crayon pictures and published that, for all the awesomeness she undone with books one and two.
Clearly I’m still angry. I feel your pain. We should join a support group.
Oh my lordy, that is just one catastrophe after another! I don’t even see the point of setting up the first book when it was just completely contradicted in the next ones. Like…what even. But hey, I ranted enough in my review (no really, it was just one long rant!).

Great choices, Emily! I haven’t read any of these books except for The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and I must say, I am also in the minority – I didn’t like Charlie when I first read the book. Thinking back, that would’ve been a great choice for my TTT this week also! I was actually struggling to think of books for a while…I’m planning on reading Allegiant this week, and I’m really interested in what I’ll think of it because I already know the ending and everyone seems to have such split opinions on this book! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
It was the same with me! He just did not seem like a teenager at all. But once I got past that, it’s become one of my favourite contemporaries. Ooooh, I want to know what you think of Allegiant! It’ll be interesting 🙂 By the way, I’ve been SO bad at keeping up with your blog, but I will endeavour to read/comment on your posts more often! 😀
