Stacking the Shelves – the wonderful Alice in Wonderland

This week in the life of the Loony Teen Writer:

– I did my music presentation and my extension English seminar, and handed in my script for drama

– Which means no more assignments until next term

– It also means I have exams starting a week from now. But on the plus side, I can stay home when I don’t have exams.

– Our school had Multicultural Day, which involved lots of food, music, cultural dress and awesomeness.

– I got to 70k on my WIP, Wanderland – yay! I’ll be my longest novel yet.

– I’m also Stacking the Shelves!

Stacking the Shelves is a book meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. It’s all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual.

For Review

Belzharby Meg Wolitzer thanks to Simon and Schuster – this one sounds SO COOL. It’s about a boarding school and a “miraculous other world” and The Bell Jar and it’s quite short, actually, which was surprising.

So this is the Barnes and Noble leatherbound edition of Alice in Wonderland. It’s a VERY LARGE BOOK, and I have no idea where I’m going to put it, but for now I just like looking at it. I mean, look at the beautiful endpaper!! It’s got other stories by Lewis Carroll as well, so I’m very much looking forward to reading it slowly, whenever I have a chance.

It is just such a beautiful book. Seriously.

From the Library

I went to the library with pretty much the SOLE intention of borrowing The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas, but it wasn’t there (SOB), so I wandered around for a while. I did see Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor, but my goodness it is a big book. And with exams coming up I don’t have a lot of time, so I borrowed Angelfall by Susan Ee, which was recommended through the #PTAChat on Twitter.

Books Read Since Last Week

the evolution of mara dyer the summer of kicks everybody sees the ants 2

are you seeing medangerous girls

The Evolution of Mara Dyer was really, really good. Which means my sister was right, unfortunately. I SO NEED THE THIRD BOOK.

The Summer of Kicks by Dave Hackett was very funny and music-y.

Everybody Sees the Ants was sad and unique and I really enjoyed it. Reminded me of It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini.

Are You Seeing Me? by Darren Groth was good but I didn’t connect with it that much.

And Dangerous Girls. Holy crap. I finished it at school and couldn’t internet-flail about it for aaages. I actually guessed the murderer very early on, but that did not change how absolutely amazing this book is.

Currently Reading

the rapunzel dilemma

The Rapunzel Dilemma by Jennifer Kloester – really enjoying it so far.

Reading next…?

the realm of possibility falling into place

Either The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan or Falling Into Place by Amy Zhang – which should I read next, people?

Gif of the Week

Always.

  1. That edition of Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland makes my mouth water. It’s so beautiful. And yay for Angelfall! Angelfall is one of my favorite books.

  2. No Assassin’s Blade!?!? *cries for you*
And I’m glad you see sense, Mara Dyer is awesome. And the third one comes out in November!!!
And Dangerous Girls, Oh My Goodness!!! I read it back in October, and I couldn’t sleep afterwards…I think that might have had something to do with the fact that I did not guess the murderer. Did not see it coming at all.
Ooh, pretty Alice in Wonderland. My copy is nowhere near as pretty.
And I have Are You Seeing Me?, I just haven’t the time to read much right now. *cries*
And no more assignments for you, YAY!! I’m currently at the stage where I have an assignment due every other week, but that’s uni for you…

    • I know, it’s a tragedy 😦 I guess this means I’ll just have to buy it. Lol 😛

Yesss I’m very excited for The Retribution of Mara Dyer!! It looks so good! Oh yes, Dangerous Girls was so amazing. Even with seeing it coming, it was still so terrifying.

Oh, good luck with your assignments!! I’ll be in uni in…like a year and a half. CRAP that’s scary!

  3. I am so excited for it to be finally September and the weather is warming up already! Spring is my favourite season because it’s the perfect temperature. Anyway, that Alice in Wonderland edition is absolutely gorgeous! I’m so excited you’ll be reading Angelfall as well, it is a really good novel and really brings about ANGELS that are awesome! Plus you’ll be meeting Raffe! Have a wonderful week hun xoxo

    • It’s a bit temperamental here – it’s been raining for a couple of weeks and then some days it’s super-sunny. Weird. I’m excited for Angelfall because I’ve never been a big fan of the angel trend, and I’m hoping it’ll change my mind 🙂

  4. The break time before exam period really confuses my mind because I know I should be studying but the other half of me is saying “You’re at home! Live a little” LOL

You’ve got some great reads ahead of you. I just read Dangerous Girls a couple of weeks back and, like you, I guessed the murderer, but it didn’t stop the heart from palpitating.

I hope you have a great week ahead of you, Emily. It really is starting to warm up with it rolling into Spring tomorrow…Oh how time flies.

    • Oh, I can imagine! Studying is so much more difficult than doing assignments, though – at least with assignments there’s something to work towards, you know?

I felt the same with Dangerous Girls – guessing the murderer didn’t affect my enjoyment one bit 🙂

  5. DID WE ALL NOT TELL YOU THAT DANGEROUS GIRLS WAS AMAZING? Ha! 😉 So glad you enjoyed it Emily, and I’ll definitely be on the lookout for your review.

And you do drama and music? *high-fives* Another theatrical book blogger – ha! 😉 Good luck with your exams next week though! You’re going to do great!

And I look forward to seeing what you think of Angelfall and Dreams of Gods and Monsters. I read Angelfall a little while ago and really enjoyed it; and I just finished reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone, so I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on those!

Thanks for sharing Emily, and happy reading! ❤

    • YOU ALL TOLD ME. I should learn to trust my bloggy friends 🙂

Woo, go theatrical/musical bloggers! Drama is so much fun 🙂 oh, and thank you for your good luck wishes.

Ooooh, I can’t wait to read Angelfall, everyone’s said it’s really great!

  6. Oh my goodness… *internet flail.* This is my new favorite term. XD I love it. I hope you enjoy these books, especially Angelfall! And I still need to jump on the Mara Dyer train. Le sigh. I’m always late for these thing. ;D

  7. Good luck with your exams! Studying is fuuuuun! (And yes, that was sarcasm.)

Yay, congrats on reaching 70k!!! That’s a pretty big novel so far. 🙂 That Alice In Wonderland edition looks AMAZING. I seriously love that book. ❤ I hope you enjoy Angelfall! I'm yet to read its sequel, though I am looking forward to it. I STILL haven't read Dangerous Girls yet… At the moment I think I'm just worried it won't live up to my expectations. O.o But it does look great. Falling Into Place was such a great book — I hope you enjoy, and I can't wait to see what you think of it. 😀

    • Ughhhhh I hate studying 😦

WOO, 70k! Although, it also means a lotttt of rewriting. Dang. Oh my gosh you seriously need to read Dangerous Girls. Like, now. Immediately. So I can flail with you 😀

And yes, finished Falling Into Place today. OH MY GOSH SLER SLEKRMALKRMSLEKM SLKM SLKMT SL KMS. That’s my flailing for you 😛

  8. I can’t wait to read Balzhar, it’s sounds amazing. That copy of Alice In Wonderland is so beautiful.
I think you should read Falling Into Place next, I’ve heard it’s meant to be really good.

  9. Good luck for your exams!!! Just remember to take lots of breaks! (hopefully reading breaks in between studying :P) OMG that copy of Alice in Wonderland is GORGEOUS *grabby hands* I’m seriously considering buying it.. it’s just so pretty!! OOH Dangerous Girls looks interesting and the internet flailing has me intrigued! I MUST add that too my TBR list ASAP! Also.. good luck reading Falling Into Place.. I LOVED IT! But maybe be prepared with some tissues 😛 Have an awesome beginning of September! (here’s hoping we get some warm weather soon!)

    • Thank you!! I will be taking lots of breaks – reading and chocolate breaks, of course 🙂 oooh, you should definitely buy it. It looks even prettier in person!! YES READ DANGEROUS GIRLS READ IT READ IT READ IT. Ahem. I’m not crazy (just loony). OH YES Falling Into Place…my gosh, still getting over it.

Warmer weather would be fantastic 😀

  10. Congraduations on the 70,000 words on your novel! That’s a great accomplishment! I remember how I felt when I hit the 70k words mark. Just wait until you finish the book completely. Now that’s a feeling you’ll never forget. 🙂 Dude, I saw that copy of Alice in Wonderland the other day at B&N and almost cried. My dad wouldn’t foot me the cash and I forgot my wallet. Oh the woes of having no money or a debit card on hand…

Lastly, YES READ ANGELFALL OKAY IT’S THE BEST BOOK EVER AND YOU’RE GOING TO WANT TO HAVE WORD AFTER CLOSE BY SO YOU CAN GO AND READ THAT.

    READ IT.

    • It is a great milestone 🙂 because, you know, that could be the length of an actual book! Love the feeling of finishing the whole manuscript. It’s happened about 5 times to me now and it’s still exhilirating. Ohhhh how sad that you couldn’t get Alice in Wonderland, but it’ll be there 😀

OKAY I GUESS I’LL BE READING ANGELFALL NEXT BECAUSE EVERYONE’S EXCITEMENT IS INFECTING ME.

  11. That copy of Alice in Wonderland is beautiful. Alice in Wonderland is just one of those stories that goes well with illustrations no matter how old you are. I really want to read Are You Seeing Me? and possibly Dangerous Girls. Is the Rapunzel Dilemma as good as your version of the blurb? You should read Falling Into Place next. I really want to read that book when I get the chance. Ugh. There are so many books I want to read and so little time.

    • Isn’t it just? *sighs with happiness* And I loved it as a kid. Just like I love it now 🙂 Rapunzel Dilemma was okay. Although I think The Cinderella Moment was much better 🙂 oh yes, I just finished Falling Into Place. You need to put it at the top of your TBR because it is FIVE STARS AND AMAZING.

  12. Ohhhh, that edition of Alice in Wonderland is absolutely stunning! When you showed me on Twitter, I knew I need to add it to my collection too, which I think makes eight separate editions I will have once it arrives. It’s my favourite book and every time I see a beautifully presented edition like yours, I can’t say no. It’s starting to become an obsession now. Congratulations on getting all your assignments completed, that’s no easy feat and good luck with your exams.

I think I’m most excited for another Wanderland excerpt. Oh please ❤

    • Haha, I showed it to everyone. I was like LOOK AT IT. LOOOOOOK. Eight editions???? I someday aspire to achieve that level of Alice-ness. 😛 We’re not just book bloggers, we’re book collectors now, too (but seriously, I can’t resist pretty books either!!).

When I’ve finished the first draft, I will probably post another excerpt. JUST for you 😛

  13. I absolutely LOVE those Barnes and Noble books. They are just so damn pretty. I have Jurassic Park and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I haven’t read either yet, but I do love staring at them. They are so beautiful. Lovely, is what they are. Lovely.
And I’ve been dying to read Angelfall! But I haven’t even seen the library in months and I’m not likely to go anytime soon… *sigh*…
Tell me how it is though 😀
