The contemporary YA Books I’m looking forward to in 2015

past and future book week

And yes, I’ve only just made myself a banner. Deal with it.

Soooo a lot of awesome contemporaries are coming out next year.

And I chose myself TWELVE of these (there are many more, believe me) that I really want to read. If you want to see a better list, you can check out my 2015-release shelf on Goodreads.

But anyway, let’s begin!

Made You Up by Francesca Zappia

made you upWhat’s it about?

It’s about Alex, who can’t tell the different between reality and illusion. She’s schizophrenic and an unreliable narrator, basically, and trying to get to college. It sounds absolutely amazing, and something really different.

Plus, bonus points for a beautiful cover.

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

all the brigt placesWhat’s it about?

I’ve talked about this one enough on the blog – you should know by now! But in case you missed it, it’s about Violet and Theodore, both of whom (I think?) intend to commit suicide but…don’t. And it’s their story. Early reviews have made me SO excited for this heart-breaking book.

Alice in Wonderland High by Rachel Shane

What’s it about?

Um, contemporary version of Alice in Wonderland? YES PLEASE! It’s about a secret society in a high school, and pranks, and did I mention Alice in Wonderland????

Things We Know By Heart by Jessi Kirby

things we know by heartWhat’s it about?

A girl tracking down the recipient of her boyfriend’s donated heart.

LIKE. HOW COOL DOES THAT SOUND? And sad.

Geez, all these contemporaries are sad so far. BUT ANYWAY, Jessi Kirby also wrote Golden, which I loved, so I can’t wait for this.

The Fill-in Boyfriend by Kasie West

the fill in boyfriendWhat’s it about?

So a girl gets this cute guy to be her pretend boyfriend – NOTHING could POSSIBLY go wrong with that. It sounds like a funny rom-com and Kasie West never fails to impress me.

Rhiannon by David Levithan

This is a companion to Every Day (which you should read if you haven’t already because it’s incredible). Not sure how I feel about that, but I still really want to read it!

I Was Here by Gayle Forman

i was here 2What’s it about?

So Cody’s friend commits suicide, and I guess this is Cody’s story about how she deals with that, and what she finds out about Meg. The blurb says it’s about family and loss and moving forward, and hey, I’m perfectly fine with giving my tear ducts a good workout.

Plus, suicide is such a huge issue in the lives of many teenagers (too many, for sure) so I think if it’s handled right, it can have a really huge impact.

This is Where the World Ends by Amy Zhang

BECAUSE AMY ZHANG. If you didn’t know, she wrote Falling Into Place, which is ah-may-zing. NO idea what it’s about but it’s Amy Zhang so I don’t even care.

My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga

my heart and other black holesmy heart and other black holes 2What’s it about?

Aysel is plotting her own death, and she makes a suicide pact with a guy called Roman (whom she meets online). She isn’t so sure she should do it, but he might be harder to convince.

Also it contains physics so I might get an education at the same time.

The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand

the last time we say goodbyeWhat’s it about?

Okay, I promise I’m NOT fixated on stories about suicide, or containing suicide, but…it’s in this one too. The MC’s brother has killed himself and basically she’s trying to put her life back together.

The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick

What’s it about?

Okay, so this is a companion to My Life Next Door, featuring the awesome character Tim. REMEMBER TIM? He was the funniest guy ever. So I can’t wait to see what’s in store for him!

So those are just some of the contemporaries I’m looking forward to in 2015.

There are lots more, believe me. But I figured I’d better keep it short. Honourable mentions go to Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen and Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella (one of the only adult authors I read, writing for young adult! Woo!).

What about you? Any in particular you’re looking forward to next year?

  1. Gah! I have yet to read something by Kasie West. I’m not really a romance sort of reader, but everyone has been raving about her books. And Stephanie Perkins, as well, for that matter.

Ooh! Amy Zhang’s publishing another book next year? More reasons to hurry up my library.

Hehe, I was going to point out the amount of books about suicide when you said yourself.

Hehe, love the banner, and awesome post, as usual. 🙂

  2. Things We Know By Heart sounds fantastic! It’s such a unique premise, and I really hope it lives up to all of our high expectations! I’m also really looking forward to a new novel by Cassandra Clare. (fingers crossed!)

  3. OH I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT AMY ZHANG’S NEW BOOK. *runs wildly to goodreads* She is already a master. I’m so jealous. lol 😉 Juuuust kidding. I will read anything she writes at this point.
Well, you know me, my hyper-2015-excited-list is like full of fantasy and supernatural, ehhe. BUT. I want to read a lot of these contemporaries. All The Bright Places is already like, oh gosh, the best thing I’ve ever read in my life. But I want to read The Last Time We Say Goodbye because = sticky-notes. I love sticky notes. I also want Made You Up for cover love. No other reason. Just cover.

    • I KNOW NEITHER DID I. I’M FLIPPING OUT. Hahaha I think every writer out there is jealous of her awesomeness at such a young age 🙂

Oh don’t worry, I’ve got more lists coming 🙂 I love lists! Can’t wait til Jan 6 for All the Bright Places omggggg.

  4. I don’t often read contemporaries, but I should probably try to change that next year ;). However, The Last Time We Say Goodbye is on TBR because I really liked the author’s Unearthly series.

  5. As we all know by now, I’m a weak contemp reader unless it’s a particular time and I just want fluff. Other than that, I don’t really do contemporaries :O BUT I WANT THIS FILL IN BF THING BECAUSE HMMMM that sounds up my street, plus it’s my favourite trope so 😀 WHAT IS THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND THINGY THOUGH?? *off to grs*

  6. Basically, I love all of these books you have on your list! I am dying to read the jessi kirby, gayle forman, kasie west and david levithan books! *jumps up and down in impatience*

  7. I haven’t read a lot of contemporary fiction, but for some reason, I am writing a contemporary book right now, so it would probably be a good idea to read more of it. Things We Know by Heart seems like a really interesting book even though it may be sad. I don’t really cry because of books, so I think I’ll be good. All I do is get mad at the author when something sad happens.

  8. Oh my gosh all of these sound good, and sad, you wouldn’t want to read them back to back, you would get way too depressed. The worst thing about post like this is that I end up adding heaps of books to my to-read shelf on Goodreads and the last thing I need to do is add more books to it. But really I am glad you shared them because huge TBR or not, I still want to read them. Great post 🙂

  9. I AM ALSO EXCITED FOR ALLLLL OF THESE. I’m pretty sure all the books you listed here are on my wishlist. >_< I already read Things We Know by Heart and it was GORGEOUS. You're going to love it, Emily. ❤

  10. There’s so many fantastic-sounding books coming out next year that I’m likely to explode. I NEED ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES THE MOST. Luckily we have less than a month to wait. I’m also excitef for Made You Up, Things We Know by Heart, The Fill-In Boyfriend (though I should read On the Fence, first), I Was Here, This is Where the World Ends, The Last Time We Say Goodbye and THE BOY MOST LIKELY TO. I’m going to have to check out Alice in Wonderland High. Thanks for sharing, lovely. 🙂 ❤

  11. Here’s what I’m learning about these posts so far:

2015 is going to be completely awesome for books. Though I’m not as much of a contemp. fan as you are, I’m looking forward to pretty much allllllllllll of these. (“Pretty much?” Who am I kidding? I want all these delicious books.) But especially ALL THE BRIGHT THINGS. Once more, the hype of that book has sucked me in. 😀
