YA Characters I’d Name My Children After

00dc8-toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week there’s a different Top Ten list. It’s a great way to find and connect with other awesome bloggers.

One day I would like to create some minions of my own.

Once my nanna even gave me a deadline. “Emily,” she said, “I’d like great-grandchildren by the time I’m seventy.”

Well, Nanna, you’re seventy in like three years so I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Sorry.

BUT for when it does happen, I have some excellent names from stories that I’d like to give to my spawn. I was even named after a book character, so maybe it’ll become a family tradition.

Anyway, this week for Top Ten Tuesday we were given a freebie, so this is the one I chose from the archived ones!

Alice – from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

I actually think Alice is a really lovely name, and she’s such an excellent character.

It’ll be awkward if I ever publish Wanderland (my Alice in Wonderland retelling), though, because that’s the main character’s name.

A bit narcissistic.

Oh well. As if I care.

Lyra – from The Northern Lights by Philip Pullman

I’m a big fan of names that start with L, as you’ll see. And Lyra is so pretty.

Celaena – from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

This is such a pretty name, too! It totally doesn’t suit her, but also it kind of does.

Don’t mind me. It’s Friday night and I’ve been scheduling about five billion of these posts.

Liesel – from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I know it’s a German name and I’m not German, but it’s so PRETTY and I like it more than Lisa for some reason (maybe that’s not even the equivalent…ignore me).

Katniss – from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Okay, fine, this one’s a joke.

Please don’t call your kid Katniss.

Luna – from Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling

AKA one of my favourite characters in the history of ever. Not that I’d ACTUALLY call my kid Luna (it’s too commercialised with Harry Potter) but I still think it’s a really beautiful name.

Arya and Nasuada – from Eragon by Christopher Paolini

No matter how much people hate on Eragon, I love it, and I love these characters, and I don’t even care what you think.

Eowyn – from The Lord of the Rings series by J R R Tolkien

I quite like the name Arwen as well. Names starting with A, E, L and C are my favourite. Celaena starts with all four so it must be amazing.

Albus – from Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling

As if.

I wouldn’t put a child through that torture.

Would you name a human child after a book character?

  1. I love this post, I was literally thinking about this yesterday and I decided that I too love the name Celaena (and Aelin) and there was one other name that I thought of, but now I can’t remember it…. That’s really going to annoy me! I used to want to be called Lyra, but I would never name my child that because it’s just too close to my own name.

  2. Omg, I love this prompt. I don’t know what I’m picking for this week yet, but I’m totally just going to do this anyway at some point because I LOVE NAMES!! I think it’s an authorly thing, too, to have an obsession with names.

Erk, but please, I met a family once who had about 7 kids and they were ALL NAMED OUT OF LORD OF THE RINGS. It was not okay. And it wasn’t like Frodo and Samwise. It was Dwalin (pretty sure they had Balin too) and other names I cannot pronounce. Liiiiittle bit of overkill. lol

I WOULD NAME MY KID KATNISS. Actually, I’d name my kid Peeta before Katniss. Because then, when he was older, he could lie and say it’s “Peter” and pretend his mother was not a hyperventilating fangirl in her youth. (Pffft. Who are we kidding? I don’t think the fangirl is ever going to stop.)

  3. I would have to think about for a few hours. Still, I think my answer would change, depending on what book I’m reading at the time. At the moment, I’m thinking of Kate, Benjy, Stephanie, or Arnold. The last one was the first thing that popped into my head.

  4. How cool that you were named after a book character yourself! 🙂 I think as a bookworm it would be a cute idea, and who knows – it could definitely encourage your kids to read more if they’re named after a character. Celaena and Lyra would have to be my favourites from the list 🙂

  5. Ooh, this is an interesting prompt. It’s so cool that you were named after a character in a book! What book? I would probably go with one of the more normal names on this list, because I would not want to have an unusual name from a really famous book. It would be so embarrassing for the kid, and what if he/she didn’t even like the book?

  6. This is a super cute list! I love this idea. I think I would name one of my kids Alice too. Some of the fantasy names are a little bit too hard to spell, and with a middle and last name like that, I wouldn’t want any of my kids to always have to spell out their names. Of course, they are so pretty, maybe it’s worth it.

  7. Oooh! I like your choices very much. Such pretty names. I wouldn’t name my child anything too outrageously fantasy-esque though. It’d be a pain for them to sound their names out, spell it out, and answer the age-old question of “what were your parents thinking when they named you?”

  8. Apparently people ARE naming their kid Katniss, and I just have to really look at them and wondering what they were thinking/what they were doing with their lives when they decided to name their child Katniss.

But anyway. I like your choices, Emily! They are all nice ones 😀 And obviously you must like my name because it starts with C ;D

As for me, I’m not sure I would ever name my kid after a book character. I don’t think I’ve ever quite loved a character enough for them to have a legacy in my child. But I actually want to name my daughter (if I ever have one) after a character in a ballet. So I can totally understand the desire!

  9. Love your choices! I can imagine that some people would be calling their children Katniss. That’s a scary thought. I would name my child after a character as long as it wasn’t too mad a name. It would need to be fairly normal!

  10. LOL Albus is truly a terrible name to call your children! I thought Celaena when I was waiting for this page to load and surprise surprise! You picked it. Excellent choices, Em <33

  11. OMG SORRY YOUR NANNA IS HILARIOUS. Let me tell you, peeps around me can’t wait to get some grand kiddies omfg

Albus LOL I think Potter’s kid had it worse, did he not. Albus and Severus in one name. My, my. Book names are too alternative for me. I’m a conservative granny ok. I go on spiels all the time about how names should stop being too hard for me to understand LOL Fun fact though, I used to want to name my kid Tea. But pronounced Tia. Luckily I grew out of that. Now my kid won’t hate me LOL

    • Yeah lol. When she wants to be 😛

Oh my gosh that poor kid I swear to God. HAHAHA JESS THE GRANNY. Oh my goodness I actually drafted a story where the MC was called Tea, and everytime they said it she would be like *sigh* “It’s pronounced Tia.”

  12. I’ve met a Luna before, she was really nice! It must be something about Lunas. 🙂
AND OMG YES!!!! ARYA IS SUCH A PRETTY NAME!!! And you have got to be one of the first people who haven’t hated on Eragon! Let me love you!!!!!
I want to call my child Ronan after Ronan Lynch, Ronan Carver, Ronan…someone else. (I can’t remember his last name) BECAUSE IT IS AN AWESOME NAME!!! And also, Adrian because Adrian Ivashkov. And Ethan because Ethan Wate and all other general book boyfriend Ethans who are hot. OOOOH And Ethan from Between the Lives.
And Phoenix from Violet Eden Chapters, except I’d name a girl Phoenix rather than a boy, and I’ve actually met a female Phoenix as well. 🙂
AND NOAH BABY!!! OMG NOAH FROM THE RAVEN CYCLE IS THE MOST ADORABLE SMUDGE I CAN’T!!! A:JKDLF:JDKLSFJ I LOVE HIM SO MUCH HE SHALL BECOME ONE OF MY CHILD’S NAMES!!!
    NAMES!!!! AFJLKFLHKDASJF
But you know 1 thing I could never do? Name my child after a character I’d written.
AWESOME POST!!! Made me think of names!
    I like names that have L, T, R, N, A….

  13. I really like this idea! I, too, love Celaena and Luna. I like different names like that. Oh, and Arwen! So pretty. 🙂 Personally, I’ve always loved the name Wendy – so if I have a girl in the future, I’d like to name her that. 🙂
I did my TTT on reasons to read comics. 🙂

  14. It’s been my dream since I was like 8 to name my future daughter Eowyn! I also love Luna too, but I decided to name my kitten that instead 🙂

  15. I would totally give my kids names from my favorite books! Some of the more “out there” names might be reserved for pets, though…. For instance, my sister has a betta fish she named Remus. Totally cool bookish name, but I’d pity any kids saddled with something like that.

  16. You scared me a couple of times during these posts you know. And I don’t know, I’ve always thought for names to have importance tied to them (which is silly since I also believe that you pave your own path and it counts on what’s in your heart not a label). BUT. Hey, if future partner and I were both literary geeks (I think we’d have no friends if that became true) then perhaps yes. I’d probably go with a conventional name and then choose a literary name for a nickname. ^.^

  17. HAHAHAH imagine all the people naming their kids now after Harry Potter though, seriously. BUT LIESEL awwww. That’s a good name. Same with Lyra. And yeah, i will name my child Katniss. Ha

  18. Oooh. I love Alice, Lyra, Luna, Arya and Eowyn! Arwen is also lovely, you’re right. I cry for the poor children that have been named Katniss since the explosion of The Hunger Games…and Albus wouldn’t be a fun name to have, either…Alba is kinda pretty though.

  19. Great post. I just read I’ll Give You the Sun and the name of the main female character is Jude. I loved that book and the name isn’t half bad either. 🙂

  20. I think the year THG movie was released, the most popular names that year were Katniss and Rue! How crazy is that lol? I think I would call a cat Luna because of Sailor Moon but not a child. Ahahaha Are you sure your child wouldn’t be Albus Dumbledore Snape?
