Massive thanks to Kara from Diary of a Teen Writer for thinking up this AWESOME post idea (which I am totally stealing).
Basically, in this post Kara posted a wishlist of things she eventually wants to write about. And I thought it’d be a fun idea! It’s different to story ideas, which may happen in the near future – these are things that would be really difficult for me, but that I really want to do one day.
1) A book about dance. Specifically ballet.
The only books I’ve read about dance are non-fiction – memoirs. Even though I will never be a ballerina (gosh, I admire them so much), I really like reading about dance. So maybe I’ll like writing about it. That would require some research, though.
2) A novel set in a really short space of time.
You know those books where the time frame is, like, a day? I think that’s really cool. It’d be fun to play around with pacing that way…
3) A book called Jimmy Eel, a Nude
Because it’s an anagram of my name. And I think that’s excellent.
4) A funny dystopian book.
Why are dystopians always doom and gloom? I’d like some humour with my apocalypse, thank you very much.
5) An epic fantasy.
I wanna write some sword fights. And make up some awesome place names. And people names. AND JUST MAKE A WHOLE WORLD. IT’LL BE BRILLIANT.
6) ALL the retellings.
Particularly really obscure stories, or ones people don’t write about often. I’d LOVE to do a retelling of a ballet like Swan Lake or The Nutcracker.
I just love fairytales, okay??
7) A book about teenaged girls getting marooned on a deserted island.
BECAUSE HOW FREAKING AWESOME WOULD THAT BE? Actually, I don’t have time to write this. Someone do it for me.
8) A book based on THIS picture.
It’s just so sad and intriguing and I really really want to write a story about this angel. In fact Biblical stuff interests me immensely, which is part of the reason why I love His Dark Materials (despite not being the slightest bit religious).
9) Something with puzzles.
I love a good puzzle, and puzzles within books are what I live for. Which is why I’m so excited for The Conspiracy of Us.
10) Start a book with the sentence “Where the hell are your pants?”
I can dream, okay?

Libba Bray has actually written about #7 – it’s called “Beauty Queens” and OH MY GOD IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITEST BOOKS OF EVER.
#8 is really intriguing! I’d read that book. 🙂

I agree with Nevillegirl – “Beauty Queens” follows that concept really well and it is fantastically satirical. It’d be interesting to read a book set in a short space of time, and with fairytale retellings there is an infinite number of possibilities you could take. The one with the angel in it would be something really interesting to read about so I’d love to see something like that around that’s not the cliched story we’ve seen before. These are some great ideas Emily, hope you get to writing some of them soon 🙂

Haha to #3. It would be really cool to write a novel that happened in a short amount of time, but also really difficult. Ooh, writing an epic fantasy story would be really cool as well, but also difficult. I think it would be nice to go all out worldbuilding, though, because worldbuilding is just fun. YES to the retellings. I have so many retelling ideas I don’t know where to start! I love puzzle books, too, and it would be cool to write one. Now first I have to just think of a clever puzzle.
I KNOW. It’d be a challenge, and I love a challenge. But yeah, one of these days I’m going to think up an amazing epic fantasy and it’s going to be amazing. OH MY GOSH THERE ARE SO MANY GREAT STORIES TO RETELL. CRAZY.

I can’t believe I missed it. >.> I want you to write all these because I want to read them. xD Particularly #10 and that angel sort of twisted skeleton? YESSSS. Hey I agree about biblical stuff! I’m sort of religious and I think there’s a lot of fodder for retellings in the bible! (I would probably be glared at within my family for attempting it though, lol, so I haven’t. 😉 But there’s CRAZY awesome stuff in there.)

ISN’T IT JUST?? Kara has great ideas. I just happen to yoink some of them…I know, biblical stuff is sooo interesting! Lucifer? Yes please (actually this is why I need to watch Supernatural). Thank goodness my family are all atheist.

EPIC FANTASIES!!! They are always awesome. Actually so are retellings! If you wrote a ballet story around the nutcracker retelling I’d read that in a heartbeat! Oh wow this is such a good idea! I think my writing wishlist only has about 3 things on it at the moment… and some I have ideas but I haven’t fully finished thinking of the ideas for them to be real ideas so they’re more like, halfdeas? XD

A retelling of Swan Lake please! I love retellings but can you imagine like adding a dark side to Cinderella or something omg. Especially battling with mental illnesses cuz we need more of that in YA.

Anyway, awesome list. I would seriously pay to read that last one HA HA. I really, really want to know why he/she doesn’t have any pants on. Sounds like it would make a hilarious novel. Lol I have no idea! It was a NaNoWriMo dare, I think…I just saved it into my Folder Of Random Stuff.
Great list! I’ve wanted to write a book that spans a short period of time too, I just haven’t come up with an idea for it.
I am writing an epic fantasy though and they are so fun to write (but difficult too, and long.) and it has angels (and demons) in it.
You could write a funny dystopian and it’s first line could be “Where the hell are you pants?”
You have such a fantastic imagination, I look forward to reading your books one day.

I wrote a retelling of Alice in Wonderland, when I usually write contemporary, and GOD, fantasies are sooo hard to plot. But yours sounds awesome O_O

I definitely, definitely, DEFINITELY want a sci-fi dystopia that is absolutely hilarious! Oh, wouldn’t that be soooo awesome?! Also that picture IS really sad, we need a book on it (very much so, I’d love one on its history, y’know?) and one with a puzzle in it (those ones are fun, fun, fun!). 😀

I’d love to read a book base don that creepy picture at #8, Emily. I hope you start writing it, because I’ll surely be getting it! 😉 As for me, I’d love to write about stories with Filipinos as the main heroes/heroines 🙂 Everything has already been written, but it hasn’t been written with a Filipino lead, so having someone from my culture could pose different and interesting possibilities~

I will definitely read 10. Also 2, 4, and 9 sound pretty awesome! My writing wishlist consists basically of funny books. Funny dystopian, funny fantasy, witty banter and cute couples with inside jokes … I’m in the mood to laugh right now.
