Stacking the Shelves and October in Review

Before we do ANYTHING, let’s stack some shelves.

Stacking the Shelves is a book meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. It’s all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual.

The Books

The lighting is a little bit dodgy, so bear with me.

All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill – EVERYONE recommended this, so when I saw it at the library, I yoinked it.

The Selection by Kiera Cass – I really liked The Jewel, so hopefully I’ll enjoy this one.

The Program by Suzanne Young – It’s like a treatment for depression or something? I don’t know.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake – Already read this one. Wasn’t very scary.

Cooper Bartholomew is Dead by Rebecca James – Because everyone in the Aussie blogging world is raving about it, and I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. Ahem.

My goals for October were to…

Read at least 8 books. (check! I read fourteen)

a thousand pieces of you coverdangerous boysgoldenpandora jones deceptionfahrenheit 451

dunecorruptionnorth childthe ghosts of heaven

Read at least 2 books by Aussie authors (check! I read both the Pandora books, as well as Between the Lives and Corruption by Jessica Shirvington)

– Review at least 8 books (check! I reviewed 9 books)

(you can click on the covers to go to my reviews!)

the jewel cinnamon girl belzhar the maze runner

Finish this draft of The Daisy List (well…no. But that’s because I’m changing a LOT and it’s taking a while. But I’m up to 20k, at least!)

Decide if I’m doing NaNo or not – if so, write an outline. (I am INDEED doing NaNoWriMo, and I’m at about 5000 words at the time of writing this post…but you can keep up to date with the widget on the sidebar!)

And also, here is an excerpt. WARNING. This has quite a lot of swearing (I mean, it IS Australian)

HAVE A FRABJOUS BLOGOVERSARY. It was frabjous. Mission accomplished.

Gif of the Month

Preach it, John.

Books of the Month

the assassin's bladegoldennorth child

The Assassin’s Blade is the clear winner here. North Child is a close second, even though it’s a reread. But I DID still have quite a few four-star reads, like the wonderful Golden.

Things That Happened in October

– I did some dancing

– I did some reading

– I did a bit of freaking out when I realised I was in year twelve

– I decided to do NaNoWriMo, which is possibly going to be a very bad decision

– It was Halloween and I read a “scary” book that was a bit underwhelming

– I browsed through Goodreads and made a 2015-releases shelf, which already has more than 30 books that I’m really excited for

– I had a blogoversary – winner of the giveaway will be announced soon!

Goals for November!

– Read at least 6 books (it’s NaNo, so I won’t have much time for reading!)

– Review at least 6 books

– Write 50,000 words for NaNoWriMo

– Get through my first lost of HSC assessments alive

– Try not to die in the heat

  1. Oh my god that excerpt was so funny!!!! I literally laughed out loud. If you ever need a beta reader for it, I’m here for you.
My novel has some swearing too. [It’s not Australian.] It’s the first novel/story I’ve written with swearing, so it’ll be interesting. 😛

  2. You use so many Supernatural gifs I’m beginning to think you secretly watch the show on the side. *whispers* It is glorious, by the way, probably my favourite thing to watch in the entire universe. JUST SO YOU KNOW.
    But I digress.
Yaaay for awesome Octobers! And NaNo! I’m having a silent race with Kara at the moment, but I’m not sure she actually knows. MWAHHAHA. I get way too competitive. Someone sit on me.
OMG I LOVE YOUR EXCERPT. I would snatch up an entire book and read it just based on that. You are the best. My book is so soooo bad atm. I need to slow down and think some scenes through but blaaahh, my dialogue is NOT coming out how I wanted it to, which makes me frustrated. >.>
I really want to read All Our Yesterdays!! I’m totally keen to see what you think! ^-^

    • I WISH, CAIT. I WISH. I think Supernatural is going to be my next TV-watching project.

HAHA. I saw that on Twitter. I’m interested to see who will win. I can’t wait til the weekend so I can attempt a 10k day 🙂

OH MY GOSH CAIT THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤ but yeah, my first drafts are awful too. Last year for NaNo I wrote about a girl who gets homeschooled by her granny. So freaking weird. Although I think this first draft is one of my best. Still awful, but not AS awful 😛

  3. You’ve got some great reads ahead of you Emily – especially with Cooper Bartholomew Is Dead! Rebecca James is the Aussie queen of YA psychological thrillers. The excerpt you shared is great and realistic, so I’m sure the rest of your work in progress is going to be fantastic 🙂 I’m with you when it comes to getting through the first lot of HSC assessments while still surviving from the a) workload and b) heat with the warmer weather coming on. Best wishes for the month ahead and happy reading!

  4. You and Cait are just fantastic you know? You’re both wonderful writers and I honestly would LOVE to read more of your writing, it’s just so down to earth, hilarious and really really enjoyable, even in small amounts, and I think you should totally let me Beta read your work, right? Righto. Well done for all the books, 14 is great, I wowed myself this month too and SO glad you had a nice celebration, blogging is tough, so two years is quite the accomplishment. Good luck for November Emily! 😀

  5. OMG I love your excerpt! 😀 I think I’m going to just start NaNo after my big exam on Thursday, I might not get to 50,000 words, but I’m going to try but it is hard when you have a year 12 exam AND then 5 other year 11 exams. :/
and OMG didn’t you just LOVE Jessica Shirvington’s work? 😀 I can’t wait to see what she writes next! And I can’t wait for The Bane Chronicles either. 😀

  6. I REALLY want to read All Our Yesterdays as well, AND THE PROGRAM! I should probably make my own 2015 releases shelf, that sounds like a great idea.

And oooooh, you have a very nice pile of books there. 😀 All Our Yesterdays = Awesome. The Selection = I loved this book even though there are sooo many mixed reviews about it. The Program = This one surprised me! I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. Anna Dressed in Blood = Quite creepily awesome. Cooper B is Dead = Enjoyed, but a little underwhelming — I’m particularity interested to see what you’ll think of that one.

Good luck with your first lot of HSC exams. SCARY.

  8. SO MUCH YES TO ALL OUR YESTERDAYS. I can’t wait for you to read that one!! Can I just say, your NaNo story has encapsulated the Aus colloquialism PERFECTLY, or at the least one most commonly found on the playground. The story is going to turn out fantastically!

Take a deep breath with the first lot of HSC thingys. Remember, they’re the least in weighting so it isn’t the end of the world 🙂 You’ve got the holidays to reevaluate!

  9. Ello!!! Hows it going? I see you are ridiculously busy and stuff… the John GIF is probably my most second favorite GIF ever (the first one is the ones with the “ungodly” things.. I forget what it looks like).
I wish you all the fabulousness in NaNoWriMo, that thing is difficult.
Also, you’re reading THE SELECTION?!! Finally. See I never read any other books in that series but that one was pretty good 🙂
Have a wonderful month and succeed in all your goals!!!

  10. I love the excerpt! Everything needs to be said with cake. I demand you keep going with this one. While you’re busy with that, I’ll just snatch Wanderland while you’re distracted.

I’ve read every one of those in your haul this week and I must say, I totally approve. Cooper first though. You’ll absolutely LOVE it! Gosh, you’ve read a crapload of books last month. I must be getting slower in my old age.
Have a fabulous week poppet ❤

  11. Hope you have a wonderful November and you achieve your writing goals for Nano! I really did enjoy All Our Yesterdays, such a great condensed and action packed time travel story. I am so glad you picked up Cooper Bartholomew as well, it’s a great mystery 😀 Enjoy Emily!
